Mission

The mission of OHED is to alleviate poverty, famine, diseases, illiteracy, and their related consequences in the South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). We do so through our framework of 56 village committees that enable OHED’s more than 500 full members and more than 3,000 volunteers to help each other through exchange, support, listening, and awareness of each other’s concerns.

VISION

OHED envisions an environment where women, girls and all family members are valued, the rights of underprivileged and marginalized are preserved, and where the lives of the most vulnerable community groups remain secured and stable.

In this way, every Congolese can become responsible for a well-led nation where peace and justice reign and where all people have the right to contribute for a common success.

BYLAWS

The OHED Bylaws represent the guiding document for the organization.  Click here for the Bylaws.

INTERVENTION DOMAINS

OHED intervention domains aim to improve living conditions for promoting and protecting human safety, health and well-being. In operational zones, OHED members are using evaluation processes to regularly examine factors influencing implementation of each program. Together, we scrutinize the extent to which the intervention domains were implemented as planned and ways our organizational context hindered or facilitated the achievement on ground. Generally, OHED members conduct the following programs in target areas:

  • Bicycle, transport and economic growth
  • Food security, Child Protection and Humanitarian Services
  • Peace building, conflicts resolution and Human Rights
  • Health, SGBV and women empowerment
  • Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
  • Vocational training, forums and consultations
  • Sports, leisure and community Education

Despite the strong contribution of volunteers and regular support from corporate senior leadership, OHED members currently encounter barriers in the implementation of planned intervention domains at the worksite and territorial levels. These include financial demands that drive work intensity; turnover of site and territorial management which disrupt the continuity in the implementation of intervention domains; and staffing constraints that further increase the workload and pace.

At OHED, findings underscore the need for ongoing commitment and support from both national and international organizations as well as state institutions.

OUR MAIN APPROACHES

OHED members need:
⮚ Faithful messengers of charity, education and development in respect of their mission, vision, work and diversity;
⮚ Trusted partners in lasting cooperation and exchange of experiences and skills;
⮚ Powerful motivators of caring, assisting and creating new development initiatives;
⮚ Courageous promoters of quality education, equal justice and lasting peace and stability;
⮚ Inspiring models of cooperation and collaboration with partners and state authorities

OHED members have been implementing a lot of self-reliance projects by sensitizing communities on the contributions to development of their localities and villages in the DR Congo.Some of the most active are Bukavu, Baraka and Uvira towns as well as the Shabunda, Fizi, Kalehe, and Walungu territories.
