OHED Humanitarian Work

Background:  Towns and villages in the eastern part of the DRC have suffered extortions, killings, lootings and sexual violence by armed groups and bandits.  The number of Human Rights violations has increased in the rural areas where the government army and UN forces are not visible.
As a result, the inhabitants of the DR Congo (especially those residing in the South and North Kivu Provinces) have been fleeing their villages in search of safety, either in different villages or abroad.

Solidarity and Community Building

In fact, amongst members, solidarity highlights the nature of the organizational social attachment and the notion of collective responsibility and networks to assist communities under circumstances. Pamoja Tunaweza – “Together we can”

Assisting Refugees

OHED members have the obligation to protect the rights of refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to the same standard as that for all citizens in the DR Congo.

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene

In the South Kivu Province, there is a particular deficiency of clean and safe water in most households, hospitals, schools, markets, dispensaries, health centers, and other community gathering locations. And this problem results in increasing diseases and related deaths among the affected local communities.

Malnutrition

Adequate nutrition is vital to individuals’ good health and to economic development of Congolese communities in towns and villages. Malnutrition perpetuates a cycle of poverty, discrimination and other inequalities within the Congolese communities.

Child Protection

At OHED, child protection is defined as being the process of protecting individual children identified as suffering from significant harm as a result of abuse or neglect. It involves measures and structures designed to prevent and respond to abuse.

Health Education

When it comes to building a healthy community, the importance of health education cannot be overlooked. OHED community health workers collaborate with all stakeholders in a community – from its citizens to its government, education and medical officials – to improve health and wellness and ensure equal access to healthcare.

Empowerment of Women

Reaching gender equality and strengthening women rights are essential for sustainable development in OHED operational zones and across the entire DR Congo.

Food Security

OHED volunteers are overseeing manioc, palm tree, sugar cane, pineapple, tomato, pumpkin and rice plantations throughout the rural areas
