Tailoring and Fashion

It should be important to inform that dressmaking or tailoring is a home economic initiative that creates clothing and fashion when OHED members operate it. It is important because it fixes members economically and helps other community groups to get well-dressed and earn money through selling.

Also, tailoring increases self-esteem in areas where people are affected by poverty and hunger challenges. In general, OHED female dressmakers help other people enhance their body assets and hide their flaws in towns and villages. Just like makeup, clothes are the basic things that can help in enhancing whatever asset a person has and be able to hide whatever flaws that person wants to keep private. So, tailoring is an important aspect of designed fashion which emphasizes more on new styles.

From January 2018 to December 2022, OHED members have been leading six tailoring programs respectively in Kagembe, Uvira, Misisi, Maindombe, Kilembwe and Bukavu areas. However, they need more materials (or kits) for the advancement of their activities.

In the coming days, the OHED tailoring committee will be sending five trainers and four new trained staff members (including three ladies) to new small centers to build the capacity of the newly recruited volunteers and help them move ahead and develop their knowledge and sense of hope in their self-reliance tailoring programs.

At present, community participants are benefitting knowledge from tailoring projects and are getting certificates witnessing their completion in the created centers. However, more sawing machines are highly needed for the enhancement of skills and/or talents of learners.
